Illness had taken over in Eder Kemo, and the same fever that had killed dozens had nearly killed Cecelie. If it had not been for the kind hearted wife of the leader of Riven Cecelie Atreyu would have been long gone. Her family, if any remained, would never have known what happened to her (because let's face it, she was just another nameless face in Eder Kemo). The leader had wanted her saviour killed on sight but the warmness of his wife's heart had saved Hawke from slaughter.

In return for saving her and her fiance's life Cecelie was planning on sneaking to Riven to give her a bouquet of wild flowers she had grown. It was late at night and Hawke was occupied by going back to Gabreeseen to check in, so Cecelie took the opportunity sneak to Riven. Just as she touched the portal to leave Uru it snapped her wrist back, the flowers dropping to the ground as she was thrown through the portal and tossed into the wrong age. As she caught her footing and stumbled to the ground her injured wrist caught her fall and she whimpered, but the echoing sound alerted her that she was in the wrong place. The sound of her voice repeated around her unlike it would have in Riven, and as she looked up she saw the bone-made Observatory. In a moment of panic she jumped up to her feet and tried to go back through the portal to Uru, but there was no connection, no life left in the portal. It was simply decoration, and it quickly hit her that she was trapped in J'nanin inside the locked and dark Observatory.

If there was one thing that Julian Waters had trouble wrapping his brain around, it was the infinite and vast expanse of outer space. He, who at the age of six was building and maintaining portals between the ages, simply could not fathom the endlessness of the heavens. The universe, he was sure, was much too big to ever be traversed at least within a single generation and it was full of planets, constellations, and galaxies that held secrets just waiting to be unlocked. Julian wasn't sure that he would ever be able to fully grasp the concept of the vastness of the universe, but that's why he loved it. He loved trying even though he was 99% sure that he, himself, would never be able to gather all the information that the universe had to offer because that meant it would always be able to offer something new and exciting.

Julian attempted to whistle as he made his way up to the top floor of the Observatory. He couldn't carry a tune to save his life but he liked the way the single note he could utter echoed of the cylindrical walls of the sacred place. He had spent the better part of the day in J'nanin, under the pretense of going to check on a malfunctioning portal. In fact, he had spent his entire time there logging the habits of the wild animals that lived in J'nanin. He had received a nasty gash on his hand where a Piranha Bird had bitten him but the bite was worth it as he had gathered some very useful information. There was a part of him that felt guilty for skipping out on work to pursue such frivolous studies but he rarely got any time off in Tomahna and the fresh air and friendly atmosphere of his home Age cheered and revitalized him a great deal. He would be going back to work chipper and in better health than he left it, especially after spending the night star gazing. When he reached the top floor of the observatory he perceived that he was not alone in the giant tower. There was a figure on the floor by the portal who looked like they had been spit out of it in a most unpleasant manner.
"Excuse me, are you alright?" Julian asked as he neared the person, but stopped short when he beheld a woman he had not seen for a very long time. She was older now and more mature but there was no mistaking the long dark hair and the deep piercing eyes. "Cecelei, is that you?"

Had the portal broken down three years prior Cecelie would have been elated to be spit out in J'nanin. She would have found it amusing and snuck out of the observatory feeling like an accomplished little spy. Not now. Now she had been avoiding her mother's home age like the plague. She knew familiar faces would show up and recognize her, as she looked oh-so much like her mother, and she didn't want to have to explain what had happened. The memory of her mother's death haunted her enough, she didn't want to have to relive it and tell the entire Age. She just wanted to live in Eder Kemo and hide (which, three years prior, would have been the exact opposite of what Cecelie would have done).

A hiss echoed in the room as she touched her wrist, frowning at what felt like a sprain. What had happened? She was trying to do something nice and wound up the last place she wanted to be! Her dark brown eyes turned to the floor at the few petals that had followed her through the portal. Just as she was about to pick herself up and dust off she heard a voice and turned to look over her shoulder, her long dark tresses falling over her back. "Julian?" Cece paused, then scrambled to turn towards him and kneeled on the floor. "Julian!" With that she rose in a charmingly ungraceful manner and rushed towards him. "Where have you been all my life!" Introverted was the last thing Cecelie was, and to prove that she rushed Julian and nearly knocked the boy (he may have been a man now but he would always be a boy to her) over. Her slender arms wrapped around him and she squeaked in a mixture of happiness touched with pain from her crumpled wrist. As she squeezed the thin matured boy she pulled back just enough to kiss both his cheeks a few times, laughing all the while. "It has been too long!"

Julian laughed as he caught his friend though she very nearly knocked him off balance. Yes, it had been too long, far too long. Cecelie was no longer the energetic girl he had known in his youth, she had grown and matured and she was now a woman no matter which way you looked at it. Even her enthusiastic antics, which in others could be called girlish, had an older and more eloquent quality to them. He wondered idly if this transformation had happened gradually as she aged or suddenly as it appeared to him. In his mind's eye, he could still see clearly the assertive and fierce girl that he had once known, so different and yet so similar to the woman now before him. She laughed, a clear crisp sound that echoed through the observatory and lingered on the ear, and he kissed her forehead as he had sometimes done when they were kids.

"Where have I been?" he replied laughingly to her question. "I've been in Tomahna. Where have you been?" In truth, he had half expected to see her here during the day, he knew that she and her family were wanderers but he always thought that she had settled down, and besides, this was her Home Age. If he were not forced to live in Tomahna as a prodigy, Julian was sure he would be living here in J'nanin, and he regretted that he did not get to visit the beloved Age as often as he would like. "And what happened to your wrist?" he asked, pulling away to examine the wrist which he had noticed was not bending correctly. It looked like a sprain, nothing too serious, nothing that couldn't be fixed, but still a thing of concern. He looked up into her eyes with concern and innocent curiosity. No, she was definitely not a girl anymore, but he was glad that nothing seemed to have changed between them.

Memories flashed through her mind of Julian as a young boy. The way she would run and play with him, or the way she was always getting hurt. It had never bothered her much to scrape her knees or get bitten when Julian was around because she had felt safe with him. It had been a long time since she felt so secure. Sure, she was still brave, but there was a certain cautioun that came with bravery as an adult. Yet seeing Julian made her forget the caution that had built around her like a callous over the passed three years.

"Eder Kemo of all places." She spoke vibrantly with a laugh, a light touching her eyes that sprung from her smile. "I have hardly left in the last year." With that she rose her left hand and wiggled her fingers, the engagement ring on her finger catching what little light was in the observatory and the diamond glimmered. As he touched her wrist she inhaled slowly but didn't wince, her brave face set with a little smile just as it had when she was a girl. "I meant to go to Riven," From Eder Kemo to Riven, Cecelie really had no fear of danger. "But the portal did not agree with me and spit me out like old bread." She watched as he examined her hand and smiled sweetly at the expression on his face. Julian had always been so curious, but behind that curiosity was a gentle heart. "I should have known you would be just around the corner." Oh how she wished that he would have come with her family longer and not settled down with an actual job. Maybe things would have turned out differently for her if Julian had never been left behind.

Julian smiled as he caught sight of the ring on her left hand. So she was engaged, it shouldn't have been so surprising and indeed, in a way it wasn't, but Julian had never pegged Cecelie as the marrying type. He had always seen her as a being of her own design. She was not the same as other people in any Age and to think of her settling down was similar to thinking of like charges attracting instead of repelling. Still he was happy for her. "Who's the lucky guy?" he asked, taking his attention off her wrist to look up at her face. She seemed to be happy to be getting married, and he was glad that she was. What really surprised him was the fact that she had stayed in Eder Kemo for the past year. Not just because of the place itself, that actually wasn't so unusual for her, but because she had rarely left. Was she back under the radar? If she were, Eder Kemo seemed an optimal place to hide it might even work better than a traveling strategy.

Julian looked back down at her hurt wrist and gently moved it up and down, testing the joint to see if it was broken or not. It didn't seem to be but it was swelling quite a bit, probably best to treat it right away. He smiled nostalgically and shook his head. "You really have a knack for getting hurt when I'm near, don't you." he chuckled. Yes, this was beginning to feel like old times. He remembered well the dare devil girl who was willing to try anything no matter the risk. He remembered well following her every step out of a need to make sure that she would be okay. In the few months that he had stayed with her family there had been many scrapes and sprains, even a few broken bones, but his father had taught him well and he had always been able to fix her up again. She never shed tears when she was hurt, just drew in her breath and sucked it up. How many times had she told him it was nothing? That it would be fine in the morning? She had been a tough little girl and obviously that had carried over into her womanhood. "Funny that you should be the one staying put when I have to travel to other Ages daily." he said idly. "No doubt I'll have to look at those portals later but for now why don't we go into town and I can fix this wrist of yours, eh?"
