PostSubject: Ages   Ages EmptyMon Dec 17, 2012 5:43 pm

Myst is the name of the realm where Ages, like countries, reside within. Each Age was created by Atrus using his ability called The Art that allowed him to write in books and create worlds by the words he wrote. He created hundreds of linking books that led to Ages, but many were destroyed and only few are left. Once linking books were the only way to enter and exit these worlds, but now portals, created by Atrus's daughter Yeesha, connects them together and allows easy movement to each Age. Below you will find all information needed about each Age.

PostSubject: Re: Ages   Ages EmptyMon Dec 17, 2012 6:07 pm

Age Name: Myst Island

Age Nickname: The Age of Learning

Environment: A rather small island surrounded by cold ocean water, with one small beach and a small portion of forest trees. The rest is simple grass and wildflowers.

Inhabitants: None. It is open land to all.

Population: Varies

Technology: Large mechanical wheels located in the upper right corner of Myst Island function several items. It operates automatic opening doors, the planetarium, lights and the fountain.

Portal location: The portal is located on a small rock a few feet away from the island. A small boat allows access to the island and back to the portal.

Past & Current History:
Myst Island is named after the realm of Myst that Atrus created as a escape for his family. It was the first Age to be created for the plane of Myst and where Atrus, his wife and two sons lived for many years. When Atrus locked his sons away, he moved himself and his wife, Catherine, to a new Age and Myst Island was forgotten for many years to slowly rot. It wasn't until Yeesha was born and grown that she returned to Myst, curious to learn where everything began. When her father and mother passed away she buried them on the island, their tombstones still there till this day. She also stored all of Atrus's linking books and journals there for safe keeping. When the war broke out Yeesha tried to keep the linking books and journals safe, but many were destroyed completely or damaged to the point they no longer work. She did however go to the Ages and salvaged precious artifacts which she kept safe on Myst Island, hidden away. After the war, those who had trusted and followed Yeesha restored Myst Island for a third time and used it as a library/museum after finding the artifacts she had taken. Myst Island is considered neutral territory and contains no natives. It is used for people to come and read, explore and learn on their own about the other Ages; one's in existence and one's no longer accessible. No violence is allowed on the island, but there is also no one who truly governs it. The people who visit are expected to keep the island clean and maintained.

PostSubject: Re: Ages   Ages EmptyMon Dec 17, 2012 9:30 pm

Age Name: Riven

Age Nickname: The Age of Time

Environment: Riven's islands differ vastly. From jungle, to beaches, to barren craters and open fields. All are surrounded with warm ocean water.

Inhabitants: Rivenese

Population: Medium

Technology: Steam pipes are used almost as a form of electricity in Riven. These steam pipes give energy to small metal carts, called Trams, that move back and forth to connect people to all the islands on rails that hover above the water. Steam pipes also provide power to give light to the inside of their temple.

Portal location: The portal is located on Jungle Island.

Past History:
It is said that Atrus one night woke up suddenly from a dream about a Age coming to ruin. The image of the Age haunted him for many days until he finally sat down and began to write. It was as he began to write that he realized the words came far to easily to him, and the more he wrote out this Age he realized it already existed, created by someone else. Curious he entered the Age, finding it to be a Age of frightened and poor people being ruled under a harsh leadership. What Atrus learned, to his surprise, was his own father, Gehn, had created the Age, a Age called Riven. His father possessed The Art and had taught Atrus how to create Ages. Atrus had believed his father to have died many years ago, but it was not true. His father had created Riven and became obsessed with it, deciding to stay within Riven instead of returning to his family.

Gehn was a cruel and possessive leader. The Rivenese people had believed in a nameless God before Gehn and worshiped a large tree, but Gehn took over this image and cut the tree down. He told the Rivenese that he was a human manifestation of their God and that they were to obey him and be called their ruler. The Rivenese people, knowing no better, believed Gehn and he took to his leadership harshly. He forced the Rivenese to build him a temple and castle in his honor. He did not allow the Rivenese to venture anywhere but Plateau Island and Jungle Island and sacrificed people monthly to Wahrk's or simply fed them to the creatures if they broke any laws, and laws were plenty. A man only need to question Gehn once, and he was to be killed. He forced many young women to his bed and stripped the lands of all resources to please himself, while the Rivenese people suffered with nothing left.

Atrus was horrified by his father's treatment of the Rivenese, and secretly began sending whispers of encouragement for the people to rise against Gehn. He taught them how to make weapons from the resources they possessed that were stronger then the one's they had. Some of the Rivenese did not accept Atrus's encouragement to revolt, they believed Gehn was their God and they were not to anger him, but others did not believe Gehn's trickery and were furious he had destroyed The Tree of Riven. From this the Moity's came to be, defying Gehn's laws and leaving the village to build secret sanctuary at the remains of the Tree of Riven. Gehn had no army, but he was a cocky man and believed the Moity's would loose steam and do him no harm. He was not aware that Atrus aided them.

But Atrus was unaware of things his father was doing as well. Gehn never had any more children and after learning D'ni had fallen, believed his son to be dead. Thinking The Art would end with him, he carefully picked young children from the village and raised them himself, teaching them The Art in secrecy. As the Moity's became ready to attack Gehn and bring down his reign, Gehn became aware of Atrus and that he was guiding the Moity's against him. He made his pupils swear to not share their knowledge of The Art with anyone but their children and told them if they ever had a opportunity to leave Riven and go to other Ages, then they must. He sent them away and only hours later did the Moity's attack Gehn's castle and killed him, regaining back their lands and their freedom.

Current history:
After Gehn was killed, there was much chaos in Riven. The Rivenese that believed Gehn was their God felt lost and infuriated by what the Moity's had done. Atrus tried to keep peace between the two groups, but he couldn't do much to heal the rift. The Rivenese felt betrayed by their own people and in anguish they had lost their God, and the Moity's accused the Rivenese of being idiotic for believing in Gehn and not giving the Moity's praise for freeing their people. It resulted in the Moity's keeping residence in the Tree of Riven and establishing their own lifestyles away from the Rivenese. Atrus remained for quite some time to guide the Rivenese and helped them establish a new leadership and show them to not fear their Age, but to venture and explore. He created the steam energy and trams for them to travel easier and was able to convince them to stop the sacrifices to the Wahrk's. But he knew he could not help them forever and eventually left, though kept a close eye on Riven for it had always been such a unstable Age.

Time passed on and although Gehn was gone, his presence remained strong for the Rivenese, but ended for the Moity's who refused to believe in him as a God any longer. A democracy was put in place thanks to Atrus and although it took the Rivenese people several years to become accustom to it, it is now a welcomed form of rulership. However, for many years the Moity's and Rivenese stayed at ends with each other, many times breaking into fights when they were in passing. When the portal was placed by Yeesha, the Rivenese were not open to exploring other Ages, but the men and women that Gehn had taught The Art took the opportunity to flee into other Ages as he had requested. No amount of persuasion convinced the Rivenese or Moity's to leave their Age...but it did not matter, for war came upon them regardless.

The Rivenese could be considered a waring people, but were not prepared for the onslaught. Hundreds of them were slaughtered in a matter of a few days until finally the Moity's took command and fought back. They did not perhaps have the weapons that the other soldiers did, but they knew the Age and it's secrets and took it to their advantage. They not only fought for their Age, but left it to fight in other Ages as well and although not matched equally to Uru's war strength, they did give them quite the trouble and did much damage in J'nanin as well. When Yeesha was captured, the Rivenese were torn. They did not want her killed but also did not want her released, blaming her for the murder of their people for she was the one that created and placed the portals.

After the war, Riven returned to it's normal state and began rebuilding their lives, though were shaken by the war. The Rivenese feared being attacked again and because of this fear a reconciliation with the Moity's was created. The Rivenese acknowledged that it was the Moity's that saved Riven and regard them highly now as their protectors. Riven is very hostile to people from other Ages and will attack anyone that is not Rivenese, but it is a Age often visited by those who seek The Art. Whispers after the war gave clues that Gehn knew The Art and there are (false) rumors that he had children in secret. Because of this Riven is often the target for trying to find roots of people who know The Art.

Ages Empty
PostSubject: Re: Ages   Ages EmptyMon Dec 17, 2012 11:05 pm

Age Name: J'nanin

Age Nickname: The Age of Festivities

Environment: Beaches surround all the edges of the island. The core is simply rock and sand. It is always cloudy and rains often, which constantly keeps J'nanin under 70 degrees.

Inhabitants: Nanites

Population: Low

Technology: Elevators can be found in the observatory and one in the village and is operated by a automatic pulley system. Tall, very bright lamps are scattered about the island, powered by solar energy and help light up the edge of the island at night. They also have wooden box camera's that take black and white photo's and have many forms of instruments and fireworks.

Portal location: The portal is located in the observatory on the top floor.

Past History:
It is said J'nanin was created from the ocean, that it lovingly shaped the island of J'nanin and changed fish into humans to live upon it. It in fact was created by Atrus for his wife, Catherine, because she said she longed to be near the beach and smell the ocean on the wind. J'nanin from the start was a passive Age, where the people openly welcomed Atrus and his family with a warm embrace. Atrus enjoyed visiting J'nanin, a world he created shortly after his father Gehn died in Riven, for although the scenery was dreary and cold the people were bright and festive. They did not hold so tight to traditions or feel the need to follow a God to feel fulfilled, they were fulfilled with their own lives. They were never the types of people to over question things or snoop, what they knew was what they knew and it was fine by them.

J'nanin at first for quite some time had a ruler. Every year a man and a man alone was elected, only by men as well, to lead the village and was given power much like a King. However, Nanites early on saw that corruption was far too easy when giving a man total power. Many times these men would promise gifts, money and jobs to families so that they would vote for them year after year. These rulers would become too possessive, and slowly started draining J'nanin's people to give themselves the best. It was in fact a woman, Eliza, who began to expose the dangers of having one male leader as the sole ruler and the truth of the dirty politics that went into it. Because of this, Nanities rethought the system and decided a council would be far better. Because it was Eliza, a woman, who helped create this idea it was than allowed that woman lead as well and not solely men.

Eliza's leadership also helped woman in J'nanin have a voice and to be seen as equals to men. She was the first woman on the council, for she was the eldest woman in J'nanin at seventy-three. She insisted for women to have rights and empowered them to not be meek to their husbands or fathers. Women in J'nanin enjoyed having equality so much that they overstepped that line and rather became the head's of their households instead of the men. Nanite men however were not opposed to this, and quite welcomed not being the dominate gender. A woman's knowledge came to be far brighter and more important than a male's opinion and although men are still respected and woman give them the illusion they are in charge, a true Nanite man knows who really wears the pants in J'nanin.

Current history:
When Yeesha placed the portal in J'nanin, the people were welcoming to the idea and eager for the promises of exploration and unity with the other Ages that Yeesha spoke of. They loved and trusted her like her mother and father before her and thought the idea was splendid. They were the first to use the portal and the first to try and reach out to create friendships and common ground with people of the other Ages. They believed strongly in the peace Yeesha wanted to achieve and were happy to be the first pioneers to advocate it. However when things went sour, they were the first to retreat to try and avoid the fighting.

When the war still came to them, the Nanite council members tried to reason with those who wished to cause J'nanin harm, that they wanted no part in the war and had no intention of taking over anyone's Age. They made it clear they wanted to possess no power, but this did not stop forces from other Ages in attacking them. The men took arms and did everything to defend their Age, but did not pursue retaliation. The men were not prepared for war nor knew proper skills in fighting, so many men, women and children were lost and their numbers dropped significantly by the time the war ended. They were the first portal Yeesha destroyed and tried to stop another being placed there, but were not able too. They destroyed many portals after the war, but gave up when they all continued to be replaced.

Most Nanites greatly opposed Yeesha's capture and murder, for they did not believe she was to blame for the war that transpired and still stay faithful to the ideals that she had wanted even if it had not come to pass the way she envisioned. J'nanin took the longest to recover from the war for they lost the highest number of people, but were able to recover none the less. They are content with their Age alone and although they still welcome strangers into their Age, they encourage those of their own to not venture outside of J'nanin. A festival is thrown every year in March on the day Yeesha was killed, to celebrate her life and her accomplishments.

Ages Empty
PostSubject: Re: Ages   Ages EmptyTue Dec 18, 2012 2:07 pm

Age Name: Uru

Age Nickname: The Age of Empowerment

Environment: Uru is surrounded by mountains and hills, with the core of the lands filled with woods, fields and dotted with some lakes. In the winter months, it snows harshly.

Inhabitants: Uruns

Population: High

Technology: Uru has all the latest technology and the list can go on forever, but some are: Steam pipes that produce a form of electricity. Projections that can be used to show images or record messages to be played back. Elevators. Wood box camera's. Filtered water system. Sky trams. Large boats. Bombs. Fans. Furnaces. Imagers that can view into the other Ages. Boiler press that allows books to be produced in large quantities. Pumps that provide indoor plumbing. Clocks and watches. Cranes for building. Swinging bridges. Stoves. Submarines that run on tracks under the lakes. Dirigibles.

Portal location: Uru has two, per request of the King and Queen. One is located in the town square of Eder Kemo, another is located in the courtyard of the castle in Teledahn.

Past History:
Uru once, to many's surprise, was a small kingdom. Atrus created Uru to resemble his homelands, D'ni, thinking to make it his and Catherine's new home to start afresh after they left Myst Island. But it's resemblance to D'ni made it far too difficult for his wife to handle and thus Atrus abandoned the Age in a sense, leaving it for it's people to culture themselves and did not visit it like he did his other Ages. Uru as a Age never knew Atrus closely or experienced his careful nurturing like the other lands and was left totally to it's own devices. Then they did not think anything of it, but now Uru has a grudge against Atrus for never being loved by him like he loved his other Ages.

Uru first was ruled by the Bahro's. A strange humanoid like race, they lived in a small, tight knit community above ground. They did not take to Atrus well; they did not want him near them or messing with their Age. Atrus however could not resist and continued his work on Uru until Catherine showed resistance to the Age. When Atrus abandoned the Age, humans eventually came to Uru and started a small war with the Bahro's. They outnumbered and defeated them, wiping out many of their numbers and forcing them underground in hiding. The Bahro's were never seen again and the humans of Uru assumed they had all died out, however sightings are still reported, though no one ever believes them.

Uru from the start had always been led by a King or Queen. The kingdom was small for many years and was a prosperous land, where all people lived well and the King or Queen did not put themselves on such a high pedestal, no they very much saw themselves as equals to their people. Crime was low and health high and people as a whole were happy. When Yeesha was a teenager she visited Uru frequently and it became secretly her favorite Age and spent most of her time there opposed to other Ages. She introduced many technologies to the King and Queen and wanting Uru to grow and prosper, she added much more richness to Uru's linking book which allowed Uru to grow at a quickening rate.

And so did corruption. With more technology, land, food and riches given by Yeesha, the worse things became. The Kings and Queens became greedy for power and politics for the crown and positions of power grew dangerous. Royalty became far more important and everything was taken by them with nothing left for those not of royal blood, which urged those without to fight their way to the top to gain money and a well to do faction. Murder became often as people pawned against each other and many Kings and Queens barely got to rule for more than a month before they were secretly killed off and someone else stole the throne. The newly forced poor revolted several times, which created instability and chaos.

Because of the chaos and safety issues, those with money and royal birth began funding for soldiers to be trained for their protection and to control the madness of the growing poor. Soon these well trained soldiers became a clad-iron army that was a force to be reckoned with and only gave the royal family and aristocrats more power. Once the kingdom was as one, but as the factions grew the aristocrats forced the poor away from the castle and made them live in their own area away from there sight. The King and Queen told Yeesha to write more in the linking books to give everything to Uru that they wanted, but she refused and was forbidden to enter Uru ever again, which broke her heart. It was this banishment and corruption of Uru that urged her to create the portals.

Current history:
Yeesha felt the portals would do good, especially for Uru, to see other Ages that lived humble and small and were far happier and prosperous. She returned to Uru several years later with the promise of new technology and revealed the portal to the King and Queen and explained to them the truth of other Ages. They sent their soldiers to investigate these lands but instead of wishing to learn about them and create bonds with these foreign people, their greed took over and they only wanted to conquer these lands as their own. Yeesha tried to discourage them from such a thing, but once again she was sent away and told not to return.

Uru started the war. They sent their soldiers out to the other Ages to conquer and possess them. In the beginning of the war there were far more Ages then simply Uru, Myst Island, J'nanin, Tomahna and Riven, but Uru's destruction was so great that they absolutely annihilated many other Ages and then destroyed their linking books once they discovered Yeesha hid them on Myst Island. When Yeesha tried to right her wrong by destroying the portals she had placed, it was Uru's soldiers that captured her and locked her away in Tomahna and ultimately killed her for her "crimes". However the rash decision to kill her was quickly regretted.

It was after her death that some of Atrus's hidden journals were discovered and in them the truth that other planes beside Myst existed, but only a person that possessed The Art could travel to them. This revelation made Uru quickly withdraw their soldiers, even though they were at the edge of winning, and made a lavish sign of peace between the Ages that were left standing. However it was simply a ruse to find anyone who may possess The Art and Uru is currently, and secretly, searching relentlessly for The Art so that they may travel to other planes and expand their empire. They also hold secret power over Tomahna and have many spies set in other Ages, digging for rumors and gossip.

Ages Empty
PostSubject: Re: Ages   Ages EmptyTue Dec 18, 2012 2:58 pm

Age Name: Tomahna

Age Nickname: The Age of Discovery

Environment: Tomahna is built inside a medium sized cavern with buildings built into the rocks. It is a desert landscape with many mountains, cliffs and plateaus. A artificial lake was made inside the cavern to power Tomahna's machinery. It is always hot and sunny and there is very little plant life.

Inhabitants: Varies.

Population: Varies.

Technology: Tomahna posses all technology found in all other Ages and then some. They are constantly creating new objects, machines, energies and weapons.

Portal location: Located on the deck outside of the laboratory.

Past History:
Tomahna was the second age that Atrus created after Myst Island. Atrus never knew why he created Tomahna, but it came to him one day and he couldn't resist writing it's world down on pages. When he entered Tomahna he discovered The Protectors, who captured him and held him as a prisoner for several days until he was able to show he was not a threat to them. After they released him Atrus did not stay away, but came often to visit them and bring them gifts, wanting to establish a friendship with them and over time he did, earning their trust.

The Protectors were wise and knew things that Atrus could never explain how they gained the knowledge. They collected all their dead in their Memory Chamber, where their spirits lived on forever and consulted them for guidance. They were aware of the other Ages and knew all of Atrus's past and even hinted to knowing some of his future, though they would never reveal how they knew, Atrus suspected it had to do with the Memory Chamber. Their land was sacred to them and in the beginning they did not allow Atrus to take anything of theirs or venture very far in Tomahna, but over time they came to see he was a good man with pure intentions.

The Protectors showed Atrus their Memory Chamber and other sacred landmarks, and when Yeesha was born he brought her there with him and she was adored by The Protectors. Over time Atrus asked permission to build his lab there, for he enjoyed the landscape; it was quiet and the lack of people ensured his laboratory would not be messed with. As Atrus traveled to different Ages and created more, he found promising students who he brought back to Tomahna to teach them what they wished to learn, things they could not be taught in their own Ages, but they only came if they truly wanted too.

When Yeesha grew she continued the friendship with the Protectors and grew even closer to them than her father had been. She also worked closely with the Prodigies who lived there, brought by her father, and enjoyed creating science far more than creating new Ages. Although Yeesha traveled often, she had a permanent home in Tomahna and it is where she gave birth to her daughter, Meesha. It was also in Tomahna that she and the Prodigies created portals, even though the Protectors warned her against it she insisted that the portals would bring a sense of peace and unity that all the Ages needed.

Current history:
The Protectors asked Yeesha to not place a portal in Tomahna and she respected their wishes, but it soon came to not matter. Those that ventured to Myst Island and pillaged the linking books reached Tomahna through them and started raping the lands. Atrus's laboratory intrigued people, especially Uru, and quick work to take it over began early in the war. The Prodigies fought to keep Tomahna untouched but they were massacred, even their families, and very few managed to escape. The Protectors fought ruthlessly as well, but still many of their own were killed as well for they were not strong enough against Uru's soldiers. All of their sacred landmarks were destroyed, but they were able to defend and protect the Memory Chamber from being harmed.

Once Tomahna was taken over, construction began. The small cavern that held Atrus's laboratory and bunkers for the Prodigies was expanded with explosives, killing much of the precious wildlife that lived in the area. A small artificial pond that Atrus had created to generate power was also expanded into a large lake and many more laboratories were built. Uru used Tomahna and it's resources during the war to make weapons and hold prisoners, and it is their that Yeesha was held captive while her daughter stayed in hiding with the Protectors. The Protectors heard of her capture and quickly came to her rescue, but as they fought a hasty order was given to kill her so that she could not escape, for they believed everything they needed to know from her they already had.

Before Yeesha went out on her quest to destroy the portals, she left her two year old daughter, Meesha, with the Protectors to keep her secret and protected. When her mother was killed the Protectors took it upon themselves to raise Meesha and do everything to keep the child from being found out. As she grew she decided to leave and travel, feeling she was safer moving between the Ages than staying in one spot, but they still look out for her till this day...and keep an eye out to protect those who also possess The Art.

Uru held control of Tomahna during the war, but after a truce was put in place they left and released their possession on the Age...or so people believe. It would seem as if Tomahna regained footing on it's own, and those of neutral love for science came their to learn and create. Many did, but the head scientist was placed their by Uru leaders to keep control of the area in private. Many Prodigies come on their own free will, but many more with special or rare skills are forced to reside their like prisoners. Tomahna is meant to support all Ages and further technology for the benefit of all, but those who know the truth know they favor Uru and those under the command of the King and Queen are simply trying to recreate the power of The Art.
