A Walk Through Hatred Empty
PostSubject: A Walk Through Hatred   A Walk Through Hatred EmptyFri Apr 19, 2013 6:10 pm

Astrao hated visiting the village, but it was a necessity. He had the last of his wine in his hand, and needed to stock up. He also needed a new Mortise chisel, and to get any orders for boats. Sure, he could go without alcohol. It would put him in a coma, but he could do it. He could do without new tools too, but he could not go without orders. He needed to build boats, needed it as surely as he needed oxygen. So once a month he brought his boats up the shallows and onto the beach, were villagers would pick up any that they had commissioned, and place commissions for new ones or repairs. Then he's head into town for supplies. He'd already dropped off his boats, and gotten three repair jobs and one request for a new fishing craft. Now it was time to hit the pub. He'd drink himself silly, buy as much alcohol as he could afford, and pass out on the water until morning. Then he'd go home, sleep for a few days, and get back to work. It was an odd routine, but he found it fulfilling, and effective. As he approached the bar, he received dirty looks from everyone who passed him. It seemed his only fan in the town was the bartender, but that might be because he bought out the entire stock every month. He paused at the door, downing the rest of the wine in his bottle, swaying a little in place. As he pushed on the door, he listened to the familiar groan, thinking that one of these days it was going to fall down, and he would be out of supply for a while.

PostSubject: Re: A Walk Through Hatred   A Walk Through Hatred EmptyFri Apr 19, 2013 11:41 pm

Meesha loved shells, she loved to spend hours walking along the beach collecting them…though not for the reasons normal people liked to collect shells, for decoration or jewelry. No, Meesha collected shells to study them, to put them under microscopes and test them so she could find out what they were made of and who they had belonged too. J’nanin had the best shells and she always seemed to find news one every time she visited. Once she collected them she went into the village to clean them off, organize and label them to take them back to Tomahna to study. She didn’t like to drink, the process of making liquor disgusted her for some reason, but the woman who owned the bar was nice to her and always let Meesha sit in the corner and fiddle away. In fact most people were nice to Meesha in J’nanin, but more like how nieces and nephews were nice to their crazy aunts.

She had spent hours and hours organizing her shells, slipping them into little leather pockets and lining them up accordingly on a grass mat. Once she was done she carefully got up and balanced the mat in her hands, ready to go back to the inn to leave them there. She reached the door, waiting for the bartender to come around and help open the door for her when…the door decided to open itself, and crash right into her. She gasped as she stumbled back and all the little leather pockets holding her shells littered down to the ground. She stared down at them all, blinking rapidly. Hours of work and now they lay scattered on the ground. She sighed and just let the grass mat fall to the floor as well and just stared at it all like a statue.

He was surprised when the door met resistance, and for some reason got it in his head to push harder. He stumbled through the entry way, searching for the obstruction. He was surprised to find a young woman standing there, staring at a bunch of little pouches. Of course, he would pick that exact time to open the door. Another thing for the village to hold against him. In his defense, he never really thought about anyone leaving the bar, mostly because he was always too drunk to remember it himself. ""Sorry miss, are you alright." He was kind of proud of himself. He was sober enough that he remembered to ask her if she was fine. Nearly falling over, he bent down, picking up the packets, praying there was nothing overly expensive in them that might have broken. "Let me help you with these." Standing up, he placed them on the mat she was holding. It was clear from her gaze that in her mind he had just doomed himself to eternal hell. Damn, it was something expensive. He returned her glare trying to remember how much he had brought to buy booze. After a few moments he gave up, knowing he'd be lucky to remember his own name in a few hours. "My deepest..." Astrao struggled for the word. It started with an a. Then a d? No, a P. Or was it a G? "Ah damit, I'm very sorry, I didn't realize you were on the other side of the door."

PostSubject: Re: A Walk Through Hatred   A Walk Through Hatred EmptySat Apr 20, 2013 12:39 pm

She looked up at the man, a pout on her face. She was alright, but she’d have to reorganize all the shells again so she merely nodded to let him know he hadn’t harmed her. Probably somewhere she had a bruise but Meesha was clumsy and always getting hurt, that didn’t matter. He should just be glad she didn’t have a mental break down, which often happened when order went into disarray around her. But she liked to organize things so it wasn’t that big of a deal, she just knew she’d be spending many hours on it all over again and that was tiring “It’s alright…” She murmured, her face pouty but not angry. She watched him gather them, just standing there like a stick stuck in mud.

“It’s alright” She repeated, looking down at the little pouches on the mat “I can fix them. It will only take me several hours” She didn’t say it to make him feel bad, it was just the truth. “You couldn’t have possibly known I was standing there. The door is made of wood and you cannot see through wood. Unless it is cracked, but even then you can only see slivers of things” She rambled. She then tilted her head at him “Are you not already drunk? I thought people left a bar when they were already drunk, not come in already drunk” Such odd logic, she had never heard of such a thing.

A Walk Through Hatred Empty
PostSubject: Re: A Walk Through Hatred   A Walk Through Hatred EmptySat Apr 20, 2013 3:39 pm

He was glad the young lady wasn't hurt. If he had injured her there would no doubt be a large fiasco, and it would all come around to everyone blaming him for being drunk. That seemed to happen often, maybe once every... Oh yeah. Every time he came to town it seemed.
He felt bad that she would take several hours to fix everything though, especially since she was being nice, not blaming him and all. Most people threw logic out the door and just yelled at him, no matter how ridiculous their reasoning.
"I'm sorry it will take you so long, and thank you for your... uh, for seeing my side." She seemed to be rambling an awful bit, though eh wasn't sure if that was normal for her. "Do you always talk this quickly?" he asked, completely oblivious to how rude that may sound. He laughed when she mentioned his drunkenness. "Aye, most people enter sober and leave drunk. I enter drunk and leave unconscious." He chuckled at his joke, happy that he'd gotten through the whole thing without stumbling. At least, not with words. He did sway around quite a bit trying to hold his footing. "If you'll excuse me, I have several pints of rum to down before I leave." With that, he tried to walk around her, falling on his face in the process.

PostSubject: Re: A Walk Through Hatred   A Walk Through Hatred EmptySat Apr 20, 2013 8:11 pm

Meesha didn’t know how to yell or to really be angry, so it was impossible to feel hatred for the man. He hadn’t done it on purpose, and even if he had, Meesha still wouldn’t have done anything. She didn’t like drawing attention to herself, though in J’nanin must people didn’t care even if you went out in the middle of the village and started screaming, most people just rather blinked at you oddly. She shrugged and cuddled the mat and pouches close to her, liked a stuffed animal and at his question she shook her head “No” She started simply “I usually talk much more quickly” But that was usually to people she knew, strangers only got fifty percent of her insistent rambling.

She looked confused “If you are unconscious…how do you leave?” She asked, very inquisitive on how he accomplished this. She skirted aside to let him pass, turning her head to watch him and gasped when he fell over. She quickly put her items down on the floor and kneeled beside him, shocked no one seemed to flinch in the room to help it “Are-are you alright? Oh goodness” She sunk her hands in her hair in panic. What did she do?! Should she help him up? She had never met someone so drunk before.

PostSubject: Re: A Walk Through Hatred   A Walk Through Hatred EmptySat Apr 20, 2013 8:48 pm

He lay on the ground for several moments, listening to the young girl panic. Slowly he rolled over, groaning. "I leave unconcious, with much difficulty. But I usually don't fall until the third or fourth drink." He stood up shakily, placing a hand on the wall. "I'm fine, just need some rum to steady me up." Logic said that more rum would just make him worse, every form of common sense disagreed with the statement, but he had absolute faith that it worked, he was just never sober enough to remember it. "I should be alright," he said, "But the same cant be said for my bottle." He looked at the shards mournfully. He was certain there had been one good swig left, enough to get to the counter. Or had he finished it outside? He couldn't remember. Looking around, there was the usual assortment of J'nanin men, a few of which would no doubt be telling their wives of the whole incident. By tomorrow morning he'd have another black mark. There was only one solution, more alcohol. After some deliberation, he decided he could go with one pint less tonight. "Come on miss, I'll buy you a drink. Make up for knocking over your... uh, whats-its, whatever they are." Looking at her closer, he smiled, this girl was a lot nicer than any other woman he'd met, and obviously wasn't from J'nanin. A J'nanin women would have beat his liver out for insinuating she couldn't afford her own drink. All in all, this was probably the nicest person he had met in a while, but that wasn't saying much considering he spent a single night in town once a month.

PostSubject: Re: A Walk Through Hatred   A Walk Through Hatred EmptySun Apr 21, 2013 12:48 pm

He was an odd man…but then again she knew people thought she was an odd girl so she couldn’t exactly judge him. She grabbed his arm to try to help him up, though how much help her little weak body could offer probably didn’t do much in assisting him. She kept frowning at him “I do not think drinking more will help steady you, sir…” She took things ever so literal and as a scientist she knew becoming more drunk only made your senses worse. When he offered to get her a drink she pursed her lips “Oh, well I…I really don’t…don’t drink…” But she felt bad when he was offering, but she had tasted alcohol once when she had first visited J’nanin and she hated the stuff.

She looked at the pouches she had set down and picked them back up “Seashells. I collected seashells here. I’m comparing their composition, uses and benefits to the seashells found in Riven” She didn’t want to be rude though in denying for him to buy her a drink and perhaps he needed company so she went another route “Um but I…I can…watch you...drink?” She had to reorganize the shells anyway and it was nicer to sit here around people then to sit alone in her room in the inn.

He nodded when she disagreed with the idea of more alcohol. She was probably right, or she would be for most people, but he wasn't most people. He definitely needed another drink. Her claim that she didn't drink was met with a raised eyebrow. Everyone in J'nanin drank. At festivals it was rare to find someone capable of standing for an extended period of time, and even on regular nights a sober mind was a rarity. Admittedly he took drinking to a new level, but it was none the less a common practice. He nodded at her reply to his question. Sea shells were common in J'nanin and often traded, but he had no clue what she meant by their composition. "Well, in J'nanin seashells are really only used for jewelryyy." He slurred a little, starting to get a headache due to the slight change in his drinking schedule. "Sure, you can watch me. According to the bartender I make for an interesting drunk. Let me know if you change your mind about that drink." He managed to stumbled to the counter, pulling a few coins out of his pocket. "I'll take a pint of wine," he called over the the man behind the bar. Turning to the girl by him, he asked, "What have you got against alcohol?" He just couldn't get his mind around someone who didn't enjoy being properly drunk.

She nodded slowly “Well, yes but I…I like to study them” Just like she liked to study everything from rocks to leaves to dirt….she wanted to get her hands on it all and pick it apart until she knew everything she could about it. “I think they are pretty though as jewelry” She added quickly, in case he’d think she was insulting shells as jewelry…she didn’t know. He rather made her a bit nervous, she typically avoided drunk men for her own sake, but he also seemed so pitiful that she felt bad just walking away from him. She did not like to be mean, even if he was so drunk he probably wouldn’t remember her being mean but still, she’d know.

She followed him quietly to the bar counter, setting her items down and the bartender gave her a sympathetic look, knowing Meesha was too nice to tell people off, which was so very odd to see from a woman in J’nanin. She started to arrange the pouches of seashells out and began to organize them again, glancing to him and frowned “Oh I…I do not have anything against it, no. I just do not like it. It clouds one’s mind and I like my mind clear” She then laughed suddenly and motioned with her hands “Well, my mind is never clear. I have too many thoughts all the time just rushing about in my head so I suppose perhaps it is the taste really I do not enjoy or maybe my head being clouded would be actually good for my mind must get tired…” She pursed her lips and looked away when she realized she was rambling.

PostSubject: Re: A Walk Through Hatred   A Walk Through Hatred EmptyMon Apr 22, 2013 8:04 pm

He understood why she would like to study them. He enjoyed reviewing various boat designs, even though he worked extensively with each one. Then again, boats were big, complicated, important. As far as he knew, which wasn't saying much, a shell was a shell. Thinking on it, there were a few visitors from Uru who said that about boats, so maybe he was wrong. He'd probably never know. He laughed when she said she like keeping a clear mind. "That's how I can tell you've never been properly drunk. A few drinks and your thinking clearer than ever, it just so happens that most people rarely remember. And if your minds never clear, then drinking can't hurt." He paused as she rambled on a little. Damn, this girl could talk. He laughed again. "That's another great thing, alcohol messes with your taste, can't tell it apart from water eventually." he grinned, something about her expression, like she just realized something. He found it very amusing, and couldn't help but smile. His expression slowly drooped, however, as he thought about how much better she treated him than everyone else. It was when he had thoughts like this that he really needed a drink. The rest of the time it was just a habit. Taking a large swig of the glass in front of him he smiled again. "Thanks for being to kind, or at least tolerant. I appreciate the company, not often someone bothers to talk to me." He almost regretted the words, worried it would make her feel guilty. He looked back at the mug in front of him, thinking about here view on alcohol. "Ah, screw it. This will be the last one for me," he called over to the bartender. He usually had six or seven pints before leaving, but for some reason he decided he actually wanted to remember tonight, maybe walk through the village a little. Then he could go home and get hammered. Thinking back, this was probably the closest to sober he'd been in a while. "Say, I never got your name. I'm Astrao, Ast for short." He held out his hand, smiling widely.

A Walk Through Hatred Empty
PostSubject: Re: A Walk Through Hatred   A Walk Through Hatred EmptyTue Apr 23, 2013 2:29 pm

With a scientist brain, his logic made no sense to her but J’nanin beat to its own drum she knew, but still it was odd. Being drunk kept your head clear? From what she had observed that was certainly not the case, but she wasn’t about to argue with the man, for it was apparent he had more knowledge on the subject then her. “Oh” Was all she said, trying to think through what he said but she was trying to dissect it into facts and sense when it wasn’t anywhere near facts or sense. He was an interesting man though and she giggled “But the composition of water and alcohol is so vast. How could you not tell the difference?” Again, the girl couldn’t take some humor and instead beat it all to death.

She blushed a bit at the compliment, not a lot of people complimented her so it made her shy “Not a lot of people bother to speak to me either. I mean they do at first but then they actually hear me talk and then they don’t want too anymore. I suppose it is because people call me crazy but I am not certain if I am crazy, for I do not think a person who is crazy can properly know if they are crazy so I suppose that is why if others call you crazy you must be crazy for they would know better, wouldn’t they?” She turned back to the shells after her ramble before glancing at him with a smile when he introduced himself “I’m.. Ti'ana” She said, always having a small pause to remember to not give her real name and she took his hand to shake it “It’s nice to meet you”

It was clear she disagreed with his statement, she thought that no amount of alcohol would improve your mind. He smiled when she giggled, she sounded younger than she was. Then he had to frown when big words started getting thrown around. Things like "composition". For all he knew she wasn't even speaking his language anymore. At least he understood the general idea of what she was asking. "When your too drunk too remember to breathe, it's easy to forget the difference between water and spirits, and ignore it." He grinned again when she blushed, it was rather amusing how shy she seemed. It wasn't often someone was shy in J'nanin, especially a woman. For the most part the women were the ones that took control. And the way she rambled, it didn't speak to an immense confidence, in fact she seemed rather worried that she would say something wrong. Considering the way she kept going on and on, it seemed like once she started talking she couldn't stop. "I don't think other people always know better if you're crazy. People think I am, which is a common mistake. I'm not crazy, I'm drunk. I don't think you're crazy... just a bit odd." Again, he was completely ignorant of the possibility that he would have offended her. "It's nice to meet you too, not often I see someone knew around here. Are your, uh, shells, the only thing bringing you to J'nanin? Most people come for the festivals, though I never saw the appeal. Besides the excess booze, of course." He shook his head. When was the last time he'd talked this much? When that girl was sent to Riven. He hadn't really been talking then though, more of yelling and cursing. He still couldn't believe she had been sent so young to them. "Or are you here to get away from somewhere else?"

PostSubject: Re: A Walk Through Hatred   A Walk Through Hatred EmptyWed Apr 24, 2013 7:59 pm

There was that odd logic again…if you got drunk enough to forget to breath, wouldn’t you die? And breathing was a natural part of the body, everyone breathed no matter what. This time though instead of questioning the…interesting…man she merely smiled and decided just to go with it before she got even more confused. “That…does…make sense” She said slowly just to appease him and be nice. People thought he was crazy as well? Well, he did seem a bit different but he didn’t seem crazy like she did. She could go from smiling to a melt down over one wrong word or action, and she had nightmares that made her scream in her sleep. When he called her odd she didn’t seem offended, just blushed again and laughed a little “I get that too”

She shook her head and glanced away, which she often did when she had to lie or muffle the truth. She fiddled with the shells for a few moments as she gathered the lie in her head before speaking it out loud “I do like the festivals, but I just like J’nanin. The people are very nice…I travel to all the Ages. I come from Tomahna, I am a Prodigy, but I've been to Riven and Myst Island, and now here” She spent a few months in every Age, except Uru. Uru frightened her and she had yet to gain the bravery to venture there. “I like to study things. And meet people. And study them too”

He laughed. It was obvious that his statement made absolutely no sense to her, but she was to nice to mention it. Definitely not a J'nanin trait. He laughed with her, trying to remember the last time he had a conversation like this with someone. She was friendly, outspoken, but shy, and something about her seemed fragile, like she could break at any moment. She had an interesting story, Riven, Myst, Tomahna, not very many people in J'nanin traveled beyond the age, so meeting someone from outside J'nanin was rare and always interesting. "Well, that just leaves Uru, and you'll have seen them all. I saw Riven once. Only stayed for a few minutes, but it was enough. The place is beautiful if you can look past the people. Then again, everyone seems to say the same about J'nanin." He paused for a breath, it felt great to actually talk to someone after living alone for all these years. "J'nanin is the place for studying people. Everyone here has a very unique story, and life never has a dull moment. We used to get a lot of scholars and such from Tomahna, but once they figured out the women were in charge they just about stopped coming, bar a few here and there."

PostSubject: Re: A Walk Through Hatred   A Walk Through Hatred EmptyFri Apr 26, 2013 12:36 am

When he mentioned Uru her face fell and she looked away and began to fiddle with her hands, picking at her nails harshly. She didn’t like thinking about Uru. Uru scared her. Uru had killed her mother. She didn’t like them at all and it shut her down for a few moments. But the sentences he spoke of Riven kept her from completely withdrawing, but her gaze stared down at the mat with the shells “Riven is not so bad” She said softly, still picking at her hands “J’nanin is connected to Riven now, aren’t they? I heard a girl was married to their leader” People had seemed very angry about this, which Meesha hadn’t understood, but many people thought Riven was savage…which they were, in a way, but not as bad as people thought. They weren’t cannibals or anything. They treated her fairly well, now that they knew she meant no harm.

His comment made her laugh and she seemed to slip out of her sudden mood to smile at him again “I have never met women like here. They scare me sometimes. But then men in Riven scare me as well” Such opposites, one Age was ruled by women and the other Age ruled by men, with Tomahna equal between them both. She had been raised by the Protectors who did not identify with gender roles, so when she had stepped into these Ages where gender roles were so separated it had shocked her.

He winced when her face fell at the mention of Uru. It must have been a sore subject. He noticed her sudden interest in her nails, and the almost total shutdown. A very sore subject. He was glad when she started talking again, but he was worried he had upset her. "Oh yes, the marriage. I was very... vocal, against that incident. However, the fact still remains that they are pretty hard to tolerate. Riven was the first age to invade J'nanin if I remember correctly." He was glad when she laughed and smiled again, she was much more lively when she smiled. "I think the women here scare everyone, that's why men from other ages usually stay out of J'nanin. I wouldn't say it's the men in Riven that are frightening, it's the lifestyle of everyone there. It seems like there's such a low emphasis on morals. Or maybe there is, and our opinion of morals differ." He hoped his arguments didn't offend her, he was just being honest. She didn't appear to get offended easily, but just mentioning Uru had caused her to almost shutdown, so who knew. All he was sure of was that he enjoyed talking to her.

She tilted her head “Why? I do not understand why everyone was upset” To her understanding both Ages had an issue, and the marriage had solved the issue and built a small bond between the two…so she didn’t see why everyone was so angry. Rivenese were rough people, but she hardly saw them treating the girl badly, but then again she wasn’t a Nanite and didn’t understand all the tiny aspects of their culture. She nodded without missing a beat “They were” She confirmed, she knew her history very well and didn’t realize that maybe she wasn’t helping the Rivenese in any way, but she was a girl that liked facts and the truth.

She shook her head “There just different. They think differently, but there are many good people there. Their leader is a fair man as well. Different is not bad” Most of the Rivenese tolerated her by now but didn’t truly accept her, but there were a few who spoke to her and were friendly. Yes things were…rougher in Riven, but she didn’t see them as any different from customs parallel to theirs in other Ages. Men could be mean to their wives in Riven, but wives were mean to their husbands here in J’nanin. Rivenese were quick to kill a traitor, and families in J’nanin were quick to kick out their child if they thought they had done wrong. To her, it was all the same and she could find no room for judgment.

A Walk Through Hatred Empty
PostSubject: Re: A Walk Through Hatred   A Walk Through Hatred EmptyTue Apr 30, 2013 2:52 pm

He nodded at her question. "It's not the fact that she was married to a Riveneese. I don't even agree with girls being married at 25, let alone nineteen. Needless to say, I had to be dragged away from that argument. Unconscious." He had to admit that the marriage had solved many issues between the ages, and he had heard that she was even happy in Riven, but he suspected those were rumors, designed to lull the Nanites concerns. "I thought they were the first, not that I blame them. Probably why they lasted so much better through the war then we did." He had been in favor of invading riven when everything started, but considering how young he was, and the fact that he was too drunk to speak without someone to translate, no one had taken him seriously. "I have no problem with different, I like different. I'm different, you're different, most people in J'nanin are different. Different is good, usually. But they're... well, different." He paused. "That doesn't get my point across very well, I kinda just shot down my whole argument." He scoffed, "Fair? A fair man wouldn't have taken such a young girl as his bride. She shouldn't be married for a tleast six more years. More, in my opinion." He probably wasn't the one to judge, his bitter nature automatically pitted against the Riveneese. Then again, he had no love for the Nanites either. Just their wine. "What of Myst? Have you been there? Always seemed like a good spot to me, very solitary and all. Not so many people. Almost went to Tomahna, but I aint really the scholarly type, and would have only been there to find new advances in the art of alcohol." He chuckled happily, for it truly was an art. Everything had to be just right, but at the same time it was free form, with no restrictions, as long as it all fit together. He had once tried his hand at making wine, but the result had only been edible to him.

She never understood it, girls at eighteen not being considered women. With the Protectors she was considered an adult at sixteen, but then again in Uru and Riven girls were considered women far younger and married young. But to not get married till thirty? She was boggled by it, but Meesha loved to be boggled by things, it meant it was a new puzzle to solve. She giggled at his strange opposing thoughts on people being different “I understand” It was the kind of weird logic that ran through her mind “In Riven a girl at nineteen to not be married is shocking. Girls there get married as young as thirteen. I met a Rivenese girl once who was fifteen and already had two children. I am sure they meant no harm when having the girl marry their leader at the age she is.” Meesha loved to keep peace between people, even in a simple conversation. She was much like her mother that way.

She nodded “I have. It is beautiful, peaceful and serene and so many books! That is what I love most of all, all the books. But I like the quiet as well” There wasn’t hub bub on Myst Island, people came and went easily there. She felt a certain kinship with the island, for she knew her family had lived there once. “Tomahna is nice as well. Very, very hot. I do not speak much with the prodigies however…” Even though her guise at the moment was a prodigy, but Meesha always kept to herself as much as possible, it’s what she had been taught.

He sighed, "I know, 19 isn't as young in Riven, but still. It just doesn't seem right." He may know the facts, but he didn't have to acknowledge them. "Fifteen!?! And she already had children!" He took a deep breath, before he started ranting again. That's what had gotten him kicked out the last time. "I never thought they meant harm, at least not to her, but I reserve the right to be unreasonable. I find it helps to get over things quicker." Probably a better approach than getting drunk, but not as enjoyable. "I find that it's a lot easier to get along with someone when they aren't around. That's why I stay away from the other ages. less chance of getting into trouble." Probably why he avoided the village too. "Books. Never really my strength, I was always better at working with my hands. The quiet sounds nice. Not much of it here, except down on the beach sometimes. but otherwise, there's always something happening." another reason he kept to himself. It was nice to be able to finish working and realize there's nothing left to do but relax. He liked staying busy, but occasionally enough was enough. "Not a fan of heat myself, always preferred the cooler temperatures. And what's with the prodi-whatsits. Couldn't they think of an easier word?" He symapthized with her. Even when he lived in the village he hadn't talked with the others alot. He never seemed to have a reason too. there was always something more important he could be doing.

Meesha had mentioned the fifteen year old in hopes of making him understand the differences of the two Ages…instead it appeared she gave the man a bit of a heart attack. Maybe she shouldn’t have mentioned that then? “I…um….well…maybe she…she wasn’t...wasn’t fifteen? I uh, could be wrong…” She said with a grimace as he ranted, trying to figure out how to fix her word vomit. She never did well with thinking before speaking. She wished Riven wasn’t so closed off, that they allowed people into their Age like the others did, maybe then people could take the time to live among them and see they weren’t as bad as the nightmarish stories that people told about them being cannibalistic or sacrificing babies or putting people’s heads on pikes….oh, wait, they did that last part actually…

She frowned “Really? But books are so wonderful” She couldn’t imagine not reading and taking the knowledge and creativity from its pages. As she organized she randomly picked up a shell in excitement and showed him “See this one? It’s purple. It’s very rare to find a purple shell” She said with a bright smile before giggling “Prodigies. Atrus thought of the name. I suppose he thought it fit the people there” She looked back down to her shells “Do you not like it here in J’nanin?” She asked, her brow furrowing some “The way you speak you just don’t…seem too…” Have friends? Like people? Get along with others? She thought all of that was too mean to say, so she just trailed off.

He laughed when she started stumbling over her words. He knew it was rude, but he couldn't help it. "I'll find something to rant about either way. Ranting is good for the soul. Easier than keeping your thoughts inside." For him, this was surprisingly insiteful, and probably one of the few philosophies he followed that actually made sense. "I have nothing against books, it's just academic knowledge in general, was always tedious to me. Then again, a lot of people say the same thing about boats." Her enthusiasm was contagious. She got so excited over the shells, and everything else. She was an easy person to talk to. "I suppose, though I wish he had thought of something a little easier to say." He frowned at her question. Did he like it here in J'nanin? He didn't hate it, and normally he was content, but still... "It's not J'nanin, I don't think it would matter what age I'm in, It's just people, village life... How to put this? I've always been happy, as long as I have a boat to build. I've never wanted anything else, but living in a group demands so much more than that. On a boat you know exactly how it will work, how it will react. It has a feature for every contingency, and it all fits together. People, they're random, senseless, contradictory. Nothing makes sense with people. It's always been so much easier to ignore them, and move on. It's not J'nanin I don't like, it's people." It had never made sense to him, what some people did. There was no sense behind it. No pattern or logic. No result. That was what irked him the most. There was no productivity, all the social obligations and expectations, they were useless. There wasn't a value to it, when there was work to be done, something that would have some sort of beneficiary end result.

Yes…yes this man had such strange ways of thinking of things. Drinking was good for you, ranting was good for you…it totally went over Meesha’s head and was against everything she had been personally taught but she knew everyone had their own way of things, but his was just so…well, unique? Meesha rarely kept her thoughts inside her head, they typically tumbled out without her even knowing what she was going to say “I can’t keep many thoughts in my head” No, that’s why she talked to herself a lot to reason out and organize what was in her head. And that’s why people called her crazy, well, one of the reasons. “So you build boats?” Rather a silly question, so many men in J’nanin either built boats or fixed boats or painted boats or made boat parts…men really seemed to love their boats here, much more than their own wives it seemed sometimes.

When he spoke about people she turned to look at him and looked like a clueless owl. Of all his logic…this was the strangest. Meesha had grown up in a small group, just her and the Protectors, without her mother or father or anything else. It had only been a few years ago she had been able to leave that protection and meet people and explore…to her, friendships and conversation were so important to her, it meant everything to her. To hate being around people? That made no sense. People were so precious to be around. “I am a person” She told him as if perhaps he hadn’t realized that. He was talking to her, wasn’t he? Or maybe he was wishing right now she wasn’t sitting next to him “Am I bothering you?”

His rant made him feel better. It was so much easier to rant for a little than to just put up with it like he was always told he should do. "I've been building boats since I was young. That's how I spend most of my time, down on the beach working. Once I get into a rythm, it's very relaxing. I don't have to think about anything but what my hands are doing." That was why he was here, so that he could build boats for the village. He didn't really care what became of them once he was done, it was the work he enjoyed. He loved nothing more than looking at a pile of wood and nails, and several hours later standing back to see a beatiful boat, seaworthy and reliable. "No, you're not bothering me. Well, I..." He took a deep breath. "I don't make much sense do I?" He was never good at expressing himself, the only way he really could was with boat metaphors, which wouldn't really apply to this situation. "If anything, you make more sense than most people around here. I just..." He sighed again. "I get along with some people, most of the time. It's other people that don't usually get along with me, if that makes any sense." He honestly didn't know how it happened, it wasn't like he was ever intentionally rude or anything, but somehow he had a way of offending others. "I usually don't talk to people like this. Actually, I would normally have been thrown out by now." He hoped he hadn't offended her, she was one of the few people who had ever really talked to him.
